The most hotly anticipated album release of this New Year comes not from someone rammed into the collective consciousness by their media ubiquity. Duffy is an unknown quantity at this point, having performed but a small number of gigs, mostly in support of The Magic Numbers, and having only just begun to be seen on TV, most notably with recent appearances on Jools Holland's Later and New Year Hootenanny.
Yet her soulful voice has already beguiled many of the nation's musical tastemakers and news of its beauty and of the strength of her songs is spreading by word of mouth even as you read these words. Radio One's Jo Whiley chose Duffy's title track and album taster `Rockferry' as her Single of the Week in late November, further adding to the momentum. Now, as the comparisons fly (Dusty Springfield has emerged as the favourite), it's time to discover her for yourself.
Duffy was born and spent her childhood years in the north Wales coastal community of Nefyn, a place too remote to be driven by style wars or opposing music factions (the nearest record counter was a bus ride away and only stocked the Top 40). The upbringing she describes is one in which everyone had to rub along together, making do and mending, accepting each other and their tastes without prejudice.
Having no CD collection of her own, her first real musical memory is of walking into the kitchen unannounced to find her mother and stepfather dancing to Rod Stewart. The first steps she took towards defining her own personal identity came when she borrowed one of her dad's VHS tapes of the `60s TV show `Ready, Steady, Go!'. "It had The Beatles, the Stones, the Walker Brothers, Sandie Shaw and Millie singing `My Boy Lollipop'. So sexy and exciting! I played it again and again until finally it disintegrated." Says former Suede guitarist and record producer Bernard Butler of this artlessness, "Duffy managed to grow up without any concept of what was cool or current, what she should or shouldn't like, how to behave or even how to sing. For her, coming to London at all was the stuff of fairytales."
"And to come here to write songs with some random bloke who'd been recommended to her, me? It meant taking two buses and then two trains and took all day. Then she'd do the same in reverse to get home, playing the music she'd just made to old ladies she encountered on the journey. It's hard for cynical music industry types to get their heads around just how far removed she was from our world, geographically and in every other way. But what you've got as a result is someone who acts and sings completely and unselfconsciously from the heart. That's a rare and magical thing."
Butler was introduced to Duffy by Rough Trade's Jeannette Lee who,in August 2004 and after hearing demos recorded in this or that mate's home, became the singer's mentor and manager. For Duffy, to have not just a friend but also point of both safety and reference in the strange new world she found herself in was crucial to her own musical development and sense of self.
"People keep saying to me, `You've made a great record' but I can't take that in because I didn't do it on my own. Jeannette and I made `Rockferry' together and she's been with me every step of the way, broadening my horizons, introducing me to people I can trust." Butler was just one of them: having written the glorious, chorus-free, utterly hypnotic `Rockferry' together at the beginning of the project, they then worked on a further three of the ten tracks on what is already being talked about as 2008's most important debut release. Jimmy Hogarth & Steve Booker are the other collaborators on this classic-in-waiting.
What can you expect to hear? The title track and album opener, as atmospheric, slow-building and idiosyncratic song as you could hope for, leads into a collection of original material that some might call retro in feel (those Dusty flavours, that girl group vibe) but which Duffy herself prefers to identify as classic. You'll find arrangements as sparsely effective as those against which Dionne Warwick told her Bacharach & David-wrought tales of heartbreak in the early 1960s. You'll find lush choruses and swooning hooks (as perfected by the late Miss Springfield and various distinguished others). But this is far from pastiche.
What you'll find instead is irrefutable evidence of a significant new talent, and one that has developed in splendid isolation, not in reaction to market forces or the input of focus groups and industry experts. Duffy is the real, unspoiled original deal. "People keep asking me where my voice comes from and the fact is I don't know," says the brightest new star of 2008. "Why are your eyes the colour they are? It's no answer at all but it's the only one I have."

Bobby V fills his new album with stories of his remarkable experiences. With production handled by Tim & Bob (Boyz II Men, Michael Jackson), The Pentagon (formerly The Underdogs [Beyonce, Justin Timberlake]), LOS (Usher, the Dream) and Jazze Pha (T.I., Ciara), Fly On The Wall contains the type of polished production accented by live instrumentation that has become Bobby V's signature.
Case in point is the ultra-catchy "Phone #." Featuring Plies and produced by Jazze Pha, the cut was born during a studio session. "Jazze's phone went off and it was that 2Pac song, `What'z Ya Phone #? from the All Eyez On Me album"' Jazze was doing a beat and that was the first thing that came to my mind...`What's your phone number?' That's how the first line came about."
Bobby V then took the song to another dimension by adding one of his trademark sound effects to the tune, something that has helped Lil Wayne featuring Bobby V's "Mrs. Officer" (certified platinum) and Bobby V's own "Beep" become hits. "As a writer I've learned that there are certain elements to making a hit record. The chorus is the most important part of a song so coming up with a catchy hook is crucial, so using my voice to mimic certain sounds like a cop car siren (Mrs. Officer) made it that much catchier.
On another note Bobby's lane often involves bedroom activities, Bobby V delivers "Humming," a tune about the thrills sex will provide, while "Alter Ego" describes how Bobby V transforms into another person during lovemaking sessions. Bobby is the ultimate ladies man, but on the flip side is a dedicated family man "I would like for people to get to know the real me. I've yet to open up like that. I graduated from college, I go to church on Sundays, and when I'm at home I love to hang out with my family."
Love remains a focal point of Bobby V's music because of its therapeutic qualities. "I think love brings happiness to everyone, I'm all about bringing love into peoples lives through my music. The reality is its rough out there in the real world and love helps us get through some of life's biggest challenges"
Elsewhere, "Last Call for Love," produced by Big Fruit ("Beep"), focuses on the scene as the club shuts down, while "Nobody" is a part two of sorts to Bobby V's No. 1 hit single "Slow Down." Like "Slow Down," "Nobody" was produced by Tim & Bob and focuses on the allure of a particular woman. "If I can't have this particular lady, I don't want anybody else," Bobby V reveals. "Sometimes when you have that special somebody in your life and you might be going through it, you still want her and you're not settling for anybody else."
Not settling into a particular sound, Bobby V stretches his creative wings on the airy, auto-tune assisted "Freaks Come Out" before delivering "Heaven," a gorgeous slow song that salutes the woman of his dreams. "She's like your angel and it feels like she fell straight from heaven. She's everything you look for and everything you desired. It's like God really sent her to you."
From virtually any angle, Bobby V's career seems to be heaven sent. Bobby scored a hit when he was only 15 years old with as one-fourth of the 1990s R&B group Mista, with "Blackberry Molasses," a tune produced by Organized Noize (OutKast, TLC) that became a Top 20 R&B hit. Even with this success, Mista dissolved. Bobby V then enrolled at Clark Atlanta University, where he graduated with a communications degree and developed a keen business sense.
Reintroduced in 2005 with "Slow Down," Bobby V quickly reignited his career. His debut solo album, 2005's Disturbing Tha Peace Presents Bobby Valentino, earned the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. He then sang the chorus on Ludacris' hit "Pimpin' All over the World" and toured in 2005 on the blockbuster Scream tour.
In 2007, Bobby V returned with Special Occasion, which featured the Timbaland produced hit "Anonymous," and Rodney Jerkins produced "Turn the Page" His third album, 2009's The Rebirth, featured the hit "Beep" and was the first album released on his own Blu Kolla Dreams imprint, in conjunction with Capitol Records which debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hip Hop and R&B chart.
As Bobby V's career continues expanding, he makes a point to give back to those who are less fortunate. Through his Bobby V Foundation, the singer encourages people to value and to pursue higher education.
"I had the opportunity to go to college and graduate. That accomplishment is something I am very proud of and one nobody can take away from me. Through my foundation I want to give kids the same opportunity."
With a string of hit singles and albums, a burgeoning record label and a charitable foundation inspiring the youth, Bobby V is ready to give his fans another album that thrills them as much as it entertains them. "There's a real searching element to a lot of these songs," says Lee, who has evolved into one of the most important and prolific songwriters of our time, a point that's driven home by the 12 new originals on Mission Bell, and the presence of legends such as Williams and Nelson, who were eager to interpret Lee's songs.
The most obvious change on Mission Bell is the album's intimate yet expansive sound, which Lee credits to Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico. After a chance meeting, the idea came up for Lee to go out to the band's Wavelab studio in Tucson and try some recording. "The musicality that those guys bring is just amazing," Lee says. "It was especially nice to work with John and get a very different texture rhythmically.
